2018 Educator Grants

The Educator Grants awarded by the HMCT strengthen and enhance the quality of teaching by ArtCenter faculty members. HMCT grants support research, workshops, seminars and other activities that investigate opportunities and ideas in the area of typography and language, while reinforcing the mission and goals of the HMCT.

The HMCT awards up to $20,000 annually in grants in amounts up to $5,000.

Christina Aumann (Graphic Design): Creation of letterpress-printed specimen broadsides of the HMCT Archetype Press wood type collection, including research to identify any type that is currently unspecified. An accompanying PDF booklet will also be produced.

River Jukes-Hudson (Graphic Design): Programming costs for Design Atlas, a visual online glossary of design-related terms, providing a thoughtful picture of how graphic design and typography function. Design Atlas will enable educators to pinpoint relevant references for terms unique to a designer’s vocabulary, and promote classroom discussion to increase students’ understanding of basic type and design principles.

Ty Drake (Graphic Design): Presentation on typographic empowerment, the power of words, and disruptive/derogatory language at HMCT Vox Pop London, October, 2018; in conjunction with an educational workshop to be co-taught with faculty at Greenwich University.

Seth Drenner (Illustration): Design and production (with Archetype Press students) of a letterpress poster for ArtCenter Graphic Design’s Berlin Studio Program: Breitseiten Projekt.
