Each year the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography presents several awards to ArtCenter students whose work displays outstanding skill in typography and letterform design. Recipients are chosen by a panel of typography instructors.
The HMCT Award for Excellence in Typography is recognized at three educational levels: Masters Degree students, 5th term and above students, and 1st to 4th year students.
Also included in our student awards is the Leah Hoffmitz Milken Scholarship for Letterform Design which is awarded to an ArtCenter Graphic Design student who demonstrates an avid interest and excellence in the development of letterforms.
In the 1970s, Ruth and Marvin Sackner established the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry that focused on artists’ books, interesting typography and other works that married verbal content with images. With over 75,000 works, it is one of the largest collections of its kind.
Through a generous donation from an ArtCenter alumna of $15,000, the HMCT established the Ruth Sackner Award for Typography and Language in 2017, dedicated to the memory of Ruth Sackner. $5,000 will be awarded annually (through 2019) to an ArtCenter student (or students) whose work reflects the passion and focus that was the core of the Sackner collection.
To continue Ruth’s legacy of typographic excellence, please consider making a tax-deductible gift to the Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography. Gifts may be made on-line at artcenter.edu/giving or by mailing a contribution to ArtCenter College of Design, 1700 Lida Street, Pasadena, CA 91103. Please specify that your gift is for “HMCT Ruth Sackner Award” on the on-line form or check, if mailing.
SACKNER AWARDEE BRIAN OSTROFF: I put my shoes on every morning. I brush my teeth at least two times a day; once in the morning and again just before going to bed. I engage in fundamental patterns throughout my day, week, and month in the ways most of us do … This poster series highlights moments of life that overlap and persist.
Each year, HMCT awards a fellowship in which the recipient works directly with the center’s current typographer-in-residence, executive director, or creative director. Applicants must be ArtCenter undergraduate or graduate students, or recent alumni. Fellowships last for one twelve-week span within an ArtCenter term.
Contact the center for applications.
As the Fellow for Mujeres Hispanas y Tipografía, Ximena Amaya is designing the bilingual catalog based on the outcomes of the research and design projects that the designers produced. Ximena is a 7th term ArtCenter Undergraduate Graphic Design (Gx) student from Mexico City.
The HMCT Educator Grants invest in the professional and personal enrichment of ArtCenter faculty members to support research, workshops, seminars, conferences and other activities which augment their knowledge and benefit their teaching. Grant recipients are asked to investigate new opportunities and ideas in the area of language and typography, and to grow as creative artists, designers, and educators. In turn, faculty members bring new and refreshed knowledge and experiences back into ArtCenter’s academic community which enhances the quality of teaching.
The HMCT awards up to $20,000 annually in grants in amounts up to $5,000.
Interested faculty should contact the center for details.
