Reflections + Interpretations of A Militant Manifesto

Closing Reception | HMCT Storefront

Friday, January 15, 2016 | 7-10pm

HARD BOP, Reflections+Interpretations of a Militant Manifesto has its roots in Russian Constructivism, (art as practice for social purpose). This is reflected in the geometric abstraction, and the textural and rhythmic overlapping of type and image.

The work also expresses the duel narrative and polarity of ideologies between the Black Panther Party and Cointelpro, a subversive counter intelligence program created by then Director of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover, whose primary purpose was to “expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, neutralize or otherwise eliminate” the activities of political organizations such as the Black Panther Party and their leadership. Both narratives establish the tone and voice of its intent through the power of the words used.
