LHM Fellows: Typoteka.pl

In partnership with ArtCenter’s Graphic Design (Gx) and Graduate Graphic Design (MGx) programs, HMCT’s Leah Hoffmitz Milken Fellowship offers international grants to educators teaching at the university level designed to expand and enhance their teaching pedagogy. Chosen applicants are embedded for one week in ArtCenter typography classes, where they observe, learn, and share.

This year, as part of our educational programming for the exhibition Poski Projekt: Polish Posters and Typefaces, the LHM Fellows are members of Typoteka.pl., a  comprehensive index of typefaces created by authors associated with Poland. The Typoteka.pl representatives are:

Ania Wieluńska
Graphic designer, typographer, typeface designer. Graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (diploma defended with the Rector’s award). Currently, Ania is a doctoral candidate and runs the typeface design graphic design basics studios at her alma mater. She has received multiple scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage for outstanding achievements and was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for outstanding young scientists. Winner of the Beatrice Warde scholarship, funded by Monotype and the Type Directors Club in New York, she is the author of the Lazarus project, and co-author of such projects as Bona Nova and Brygada 1918 (published on Google Fonts).

Mateusz Machalski
Mateusz received his MA in Fine Arts (Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw 2009–2014); PhD (AoFA in Warsaw 2020). He works at the Faculty of Graphics in the Studio of Multimedia Artistic Creation and was named Designer of the Year 2019 in the Polish Graphic Awards. Recipient of numerous scholarships (Ministry of Science and Higher Education; Ministry of Culture, National Heritage and Sports; National Center for Culture),  he serves on the board of the Association of Graphic Designers in Poland, and International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. A member of ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale), he was featured as “Ascender 2018” by the TDC.

Author of over 50 type families and over 120 visual identifications, Mateusz served as team leader for the revival project Brygada 1918, and authored the intergenerational Bona Nova project with Andrzej Heidrich. He is also the author of numerous texts and articles about graphic design, visual culture and typography, co-author of the Typoteka.pl: Index of Polish Typefaces. Parallel to his design work, he conducts research projects, workshops and lectures in Poland and abroad.

Borys Kosmynka
Borys holds a PhD in Typography from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, an MA in Typeface design from the University of Reading, and an MA in Graphic Design from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz. Since 2021, he has been a board member of the STGU (Association of Polish Designers). He has six years of professional experience as a Typeface Designer, and is passionate about the history of typography, printing, and design. He co-organised the ATypI conferences in Montreal, Antwerp and Tokyo, and worked on several revival projects in Poland. He is one of the contributors to the Typoteka.pl project. At the Book Arts Museum in Lodz, Borys learned the letterpress printing process, bookbinding, and how to cast metal type. In 2022 Borys co-launched the Letter Luvvers—a bi-monthly meetup of letter aficionados in Bristol. He currently operates as TDBK.

HOURS

The HMCT (South Campus) Gallery is free and open to the public. It is accessible when school is in term, seven days a week from 9 AM to 7 PM. The Storefront Gallery, located within the Center, is also free and open to the public most weekdays from 10 AM to 4 PM. (We advise you to call ahead to make sure the Storefront Gallery is open, 626-396-4343 ).
