New Typography Workshop

2020’s Artist-in-Residence offered the collective talent of  artists and letterpress printers Alan Kitching and Kelvyn Smith of the New Typography Workshop, based in London. Alan and Kelvyn’s residency gave students, designers, artists, faculty and printers the rare opportunity of learning from these renowned masters of the craft here on the West Coast. During their time here, they worked with students, held an In Conversation discussion on the history of the New Typography Workshop, and created a beautiful broadside, American Workshop Heroes, commemorating the artists, musicians, politicians, authors, poets, sports figures and more that have provided inspiration to Alan and Kelvyn.

The week-long residency culminated in a standing-room-only workshop in Archetype Press, which happened to fall on Oscars night eve, naturally offering up the theme: “. . . and the winner is . . . “, for attendees to design and create posters celebrating the past “Best Picture of the Year” award-winners of their choice.
