Yara Khoury Nammour: From Ibn Muqla to the Bauhaus and Back

2025 HMCT Typographer-in-Residence Yara Khoury Nammour is a designer, educator, and researcher from Lebanon and an assistant professor of graphic design at the American University of Beirut (AUB). She leads the Arabic Type Research Unit that focuses on practice-based research and co-organizes the biennial Mashq conference at AUB that focuses on advancing Arabic type and its typography.

During her residency at HMCT, Yara explored the visual imprint of Arabic type through an analysis of its letter frequency. Utilizing custom software, the project will conduct a comprehensive count of all letters and their variations across a large corpus of text.

HOURS

The HMCT (South Campus) Gallery is free and open to the public. It is accessible when school is in term, seven days a week from 9 AM to 7 PM. The Storefront Gallery, located within the Center, is also free and open to the public most weekdays from 10 AM to 4 PM.
