Meet HMCT 2021 Typographer-in-Residence Laura Meseguer at our In Conversation (second in a series of four) with HMCT Executive Director, Gloria Kondrup, on Thursday, February 18, 1–2 PM (PST). Research Topic: Deepening the design of stencil types from the calligraphic model, as a fusion between both disciplines.
“A few years ago, the professional calligrapher, Oriol Miró developed some models of humanist calligraphy roman and italic with different broad nib pens (1,5 2,5 and 4), with the idea that they would serve to develop a typeface family of three styles, regular, italic and bold, and to maintain the manual spirit. Based on these models, I began to sketch a stencil typeface to work from the opposite side: a humanistic text typeface, which, although very systematic, retained some personality trait. Previously, I had made a visit to the University of Reading, to the Department of Typography and Visual Communication, and analyzing the documentation on the models that Erik Kindel very kindly showed me there, I decided to apply another perspective to the family development, basically to introduce a morphological study.”
