Do You Have A Platypus?

In our investigations, we often encounter enigmatic Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) accompanying a particular subject or institution. Their authors and authenticity remain a mystery, often evoking both amusement and surprise. Do You Have a Platypus? features a selection of existing FAQs adopted from established institutions typeset as found—with no grammatical corrections—in fonts designed by students in Greg Lindy’s Font Design course at ArtCenter College of Design. “Can twins read each other’s minds?” “Why is it illegal to sell a used mattress in Florida?” “Are giraffes government spies?” This exhibition explores whether typefaces can influence—and be influenced by—the quotes they are set in. As observers, we can ponder whether the font takes on a different character when interwoven with the quote, or does the quote itself assume a new significance when presented in a distinctive font?
