Design Storms

HMCT Design Storms invite companies to bring a focused typographic brief to a team of ArtCenter students working under faculty guidance. The sponsoring organization sets the direction, and a select student team develops the project with scheduled check-ins for feedback. This format allows clients to see typographic thinking applied to their needs while offering students a structured environment to create industry-relevant work.

Reinventing Corporate Branding Through Typography

  • Challenge: A company could sponsor a storm focused on reinventing or refreshing their brand’s typography. Teams could propose new typographic treatments for logos, marketing materials, and websites, emphasizing creativity while maintaining the company’s core identity. This could be highly beneficial for corporations looking for fresh perspectives on their branding.

  • Output: Typography-based rebranding proposals, with new fonts, logos, and marketing mock-ups.

Data Visualization with Typography

  • Challenge: Corporations in industries like finance, tech, or healthcare, where data visualization is key, could sponsor a storm where participants design ways to use typography to clarify complex data sets. Teams could focus on making data more accessible, engaging, and visually appealing through the use of type.

  • Output: Infographics, dashboards, and reports that utilize type to enhance the clarity and impact of data.

Typographic Identity for a Corporate Event

  • Challenge: Corporations that host major events, conferences, or trade shows could sponsor a storm where teams create bold, attention-grabbing typographic solutions for event materials—ranging from banners and signage to digital event invitations. The focus would be on using type to generate excitement and represent the company’s vision during high-profile events.

  • Output: Event branding packages, including logos, signage, and digital marketing materials.
