Currently featured in our Spotlight Displays are samples of the work of renowned graphic designer and educator, Simon Johnston. Simon studied at Bath Academy of Art and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland, where his teachers included Armin Hofmann and Wolfgang Weingart. In London during the 1980s, he co-founded the influential design studio 8vo and co-edited the experimental typography journal Octavo.
After relocating to California, Simon established his own practice, Simon Johnston Design, specializing in publications for museums and galleries. His clients have included the Whitney Museum, Gagosian Gallery, the Getty Museum, Steidl Verlag, Blum & Poe, Marian Goodman Gallery, and Yale University Press. His work has been exhibited internationally and recognized with numerous awards. He has also lectured widely in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. In addition, Simon runs a small publishing imprint, verbeditions.com, producing prints and multiples by himself and other artists.
Simon recently retired as Professor of Typography and Design at ArtCenter College of Design, where he was named Faculty Emeritus. As founding Creative Director of HMCT in 2015, he created the Center’s visual identity and has shaped its artistic direction over the past decade.
