Books

General Collection
General Collection books are those not from a specific collection (e.g. the Leah Hoffmitz Milken Collection). They cover the areas of graphic design, typography, and letterform design. General Collection books are listed in the ArtCenter Library catalog and located in the HMCT Conference Room. They may be used any time the HMCT is open and the conference room is not in use.

Special Collection
Books from specific collections are part of the HMCT Special Collection. They also cover the areas of graphic design, typography, and letterform design, but often are earlier or international versions of materials available in the Fogg Library and HMCT General Collections. Special Collection books are listed in the ArtCenter Library catalog, but may only be used by appointment.

BOOKS MAY NOT BE REMOVED FROM THE HMCT. If you require copies, please speak with a member of the HMCT staff.

Archive Collections

Leah Hoffmitz Milken Collection
Professor Leah Hoffmitz Milken (1952-2014) was a well-known typographer, letterform designer, and esteemed faculty member at ArtCenter. The HMCT was founded in her memory and her collection forms the core of the HMCT Archives. Materials in this collection include professional design work, personal design work, course materials, and work by her top students, and books.

Vernon Simpson Collection
Milton Vernon Simpson, Jr. was a nationally-recognized and highly-regarded printer, working in the Los Angeles area. Upon his retirement from printing as a business, his collection of type and printers was donated to ArtCenter and formed the core of Archetype Press. Materials in this collection include business and personal papers, specimen sheets, photographs, ephemera, and objects.

April Greiman Poster Archives
Internationally exhibited and based in Los Angeles, April Greiman's posters fuse Swiss design training with West Coast postmodernism. This collection includes over twenty Greiman posters, some signed, dating from 1978-2004.

 Type Specimen Collection
An integral part of the study of typography is reviewing how other designers and printers used specific typefaces and fonts. The Type Specimen collection is located in the HMCT classroom and is organized alphabetically by type name. Type Specimens may not be accessed while a class is in session.

TYPE SPECIMENS MAY NOT BE REMOVED FROM THE HMCT. If you require copies, please speak with a member of the HMCT staff.

ARCHIVAL MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY AND MAY NOT BE REMOVED FROM THE HMCT. HMCT staff is happy to assist you with copies when necessary.
