HMCT visiting Letterform Archive

Nov 17, 2025

Last Saturday, the HMCT creative team (Lavinia Lascaris and Ximena Amaya) visited Letterform Archive in San Francisco for the first time. Kate Long Stellar gave us an informative tour and shared materials tied to the city’s design history, including work by Jennifer Morla, Zuzana Licko, some early Apple brand-identity guidelines, and other ephemera. We were impressed by the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the narrative thread that she built through the selections.
Following the tour, Angela Riechers led a zine workshop that invited everyone to play with the format and make something of their own. The process was informal and fun, with people collaging, using letraset, drawing, mixing materials, and experimenting with different ideas. Some pieces took on a small narrative, some became studies in color and texture.

The exhibition on view, Piet Zwart: Brand Architect, was beautiful. The selection included infographics, modular layouts, and type-driven compositions with plenty of details to study. We took a number of photos to add to our growing file of type references.
Thank you Grendl, Kate, and Angela! We left feeling very inspired and will be back soon.
