Stephen Serrato lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He began his independent graphic design practice after receiving a BFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena in 2005. Stephen received his MFA from the Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem, Netherlands in 2010. His work has been exhibited internationally and most recently included in the “Work from California” exhibition at the 25th International Biennial of Graphic Design, Brno, Czech Republic. He works across various media but specializes in design for art and cultural institutions and independent record labels.

Stephen is also cofounder of ELLA, a design studio known for publications, exhibition graphics, and identity systems, currently led by River Jukes-Hudson and Stephen. The books in this collection reflect the studio’s attention to typography and its respect for the labor and collective effort behind each project. Their approach often draws from activist thinking, using those histories and methods as a quiet framework for how they structure and articulate design. Both partners are professors of graduate and undergraduate typography at ArtCenter.
