HMCT is pleased to welcome Laurenz Brunner for a presentation and conversation around the ideas behind Dictionary of the Illegible, his newly published book tracing forms of illegible typography across art, music, architecture, subculture, technology, and visual culture. Developed over nearly a decade, the project examines illegibility not as a breakdown of communication, but as a visual, cultural, and political condition that shapes how meaning is produced and withheld.
Laurenz began this research in 2016 during his time as HMCT’s first Typographer-in-Residence. Nearly ten years later, the project returns to HMCT in book form. The evening will include a presentation by Laurenz followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A with ArtCenter faculty member Stephen Serrato. Copies of the book will be available at the event.
