This workshop led by HMCT’s creative team, Lavinia Lascaris and Ximena Amaya will begin with a presentation of original posters curated from the collections of the HMCT Archive. Participants will examine the posters and define methods for “harvesting” elements such as typographic gestures, compositions, textures, etc. While in conversation with these special pieces that speak to the history and present state of typography and graphic design, each participant will then develop an original alphabet (legible or otherwise) using the harvested elements. The workshop will consider what allows a set of forms to read as a family, while reframing the archive not as a static collection, but as a resource for new work, reinterpretation, and collaboration.
